Just back from... We share with you some of our recent journeys. When it comes to Caribbean escapes, few pairings are as effortlessly glamorous as Antigua and St. Barths. I had the privilege of experiencing these two islands in the most spectacular way - on a recent trip with the Oetker Collection, staying at the iconic Jumby Bay Island and Eden Rock-St Barths. A week of indulgence, adventure, and breathtaking scenery, this is island-hopping at its absolute finest… Just a quick hop from the mainland, Jumby Bay Island isn’t your typical ‘fly and flop’ resort; it’s an entire private island paradise, and the magic began the moment I touched down in Antigua. After a brief drive from the airport, I was whisked away on a sleek catamaran to a world where relaxation reigns supreme - no cars, just endless stretches of pristine beaches and an all-inclusive experience that feels tailor-made for you. The Ultimate Caribbean Twin Centre Antigua & St. Barths Jumby Bay Antigua If Jumby Bay Island is all about seclusion, then Eden Rock–St. Barths radiates energy and style. Nestled on the shores of this French Caribbean ‘party island’, the iconic hotel embodies the vibrant spirit of the island - where designer boutiques grace the streets, yachts sail through the turquoise waters, and the dining scene is nothing short of spectacular. I checked into the legendary Villa Rockstar, a six-bedroom masterpiece that has hosted everyone from Hollywood A-listers to world-renowned musicians - and now the Swords Travel team! Complete with a round-the-clock chef and 20-metre pool that could rival any in St. Barths, it’s the kind of place that anyone’s jaw would drop in. (Fun fact: Leonardo DiCaprio spent a New Year’s here!).de for you. Eden Rock St. Barths Read more about Antigua & St. Barths... 4 Swords Travel Magazine | Spring / Summer 2025
There’s a certain pace to Megève that’s impossible to ignore. Maybe it’s the sound of horse-drawn carriages gently clopping down the cobbled streets, or the scent of woodsmoke curling up from mountain chalets. Perhaps it’s the way the peaks seem to wrap the village in a quiet embrace, slowing everything down. Whatever it is, I felt it the second I stepped off the shuttle. I was here to explore Hotel L’Alpaga, a five-star hideaway nestled into the hillside. It’s the kind of place that balances rustic charm with modern luxury—warm, inviting, and effortlessly stylish. My Deluxe Room was a gorgeous introduction to the hotel, with natural materials, soft lighting, panoramic views of Mont Blanc, and an atmosphere that surrounds you. From the moment I arrived, it was clear food was going to be a highlight. Dining at La Table de L’Alpaga was a real treat. Each dish was a nod to the mountains—think earthy herbs, delicate flowers, and hints of fir. The award-winning menu plays with the elements—Earth, Water, Fire, and Air—bringing them to life in ways I never thought possible. The flavours were intricate and balanced, but the real magic came from the way each course made you feel like you were tasting the mountains themselves. 6 Swords Travel Magazine | Spring / Summer 2025 With sandy beaches, whitewashed villages and a vibrant, cosmopolitan party scene, Mykonos adds a touch of glamour to the Greek Islands. In contrast to the romance stamp of neighbouring Santorini, this is the Cyclades Island for fun-loving, sun worshippers. From May to October the island literally buzzes as the bikini clad, ‘party beautiful’ brigade dance until dawn at the many, stylish beach clubs like Cavo Paradiso, Tropicana and similar on both Paradise and Super Paradise beaches, and yet the island has so much more to offer with ample opportunity to escape from the fast lane of fun. Even revellers seek downtime and there is a distinct bohemian resistance fighting the turntable troopers. The island’s main historic town of Chora Mykonos (Mykonos Old Town) is a delightful traffic-free labyrinth of winding cobblestone lanes with whitewashed houses with bright blue balconies and shutters, lovely old churches, and narrow alleyways draped in bright fuchsia bougainvillea. Wander through the maze to discover quaint artisan shops, terraced cafés and little tavernas hidden away in narrow side streets and quiet squares. Bordering the waterfront the distinctive, overhanging terraced houses have earned this area the title of ‘Little Venice’. On a hillside overlooking the town of Mykonos stand the emblematic windmills, once used to supply power to grind grain and now a favourite instagram moment. Mykonos A vibrant blend of fun and relaxation

12 Swords Travel Magazine | Spring / Summer 2025 Overlooked by the iconic triptych peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, a transformation has just completed of not one but two classic hotels in the ‘Belle Epoque’ Swiss town of Wengen. This famous, car free, alpine retreat is both a leading winter sports destination (home to the legendary Lauberhorn downhill ski race in January), and equally popular with summer hikers, drawn by the grandeur of the Oberland, whose dramatic and awe-inspiring landscapes were reputedly an inspiration for the fantasies of Tolkein. An Alpine Star is Born The opening of the Grand Hotel Belvedere, a Beaumier Hotel, in Wengen.
13 For further details call 0203 907 1100 | In 2022, French hoteliers Beaumier, who already operate nine properties in Ibiza, Provence, The French Riviera and the French Alps, acquired three Wengen hotels from the local Zinnert family including the Wengener Hof and adjacent Grand Hotel Belvedere on the northern edge of town. Both these imposing art nouveau hotels will now combine to become the new Grand Hotel Belvedere, with 90 rooms and suites, ideal for individuals, couples and families. At present it will be the only 5-star establishment in Wengen, however, the town is witnessing an influx of quality development and is definitely one of the big stories in the Alps, notwithstanding similar activity in Cortina D’Ampezzo due to the impending 2026 Winter Olympics - perhaps this might be a hint of things to come in Wengen! Having opened on 6th May, the new Grand Hotel Belevedere will be a game-changer for Wengen. Top designers from Geneva, Complete Works, have transformed the interiors to appeal to a more modernist driven clientele and a state-of-the-art Susanne Kaufmann spa extension will position the hotel against more established spa destinations in Austria and the Dolomites, a long-overdue initiative in a country with a less established wellness pedigree. Celebrating the flavours of the Jungfrau region, both Brasserie Belvedere and Restaurant Waldrand present a modern take on Swiss culinary traditions, featuring dishes like forest mushroom ragout, pure Alpine salmon, and Luma ribeye with mountain hollandaise. Guests can also enjoy a classic wood fired pizza on the Sonnenbad terrace.

Kenya’s wild Sanctuaries Get a taste for Kenya, where Abercrombie & Kent has its roots, with stays at A&K properties in two of the country’s most iconic wildlife areas. Begin at Tambarare Camp, an A&K Sanctuary on the rolling, rhinoceros-rich plateau of Ol Pejeta Conservancy in central Kenya. From there, take a flight south to the lush grazing land of the Maasai Mara, the stage for the gripping mass movement of herd animals known as the Great Migration. Lying in the shadow of Mount Kenya, Tambarare Camp lies secluded among the grasslands of Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The boutique safari lodge’s 10 tented pavilions feature contemporary safari-chic interiors with sun-bleached wood accents and bold pops of colour. The main camp houses the dining area and lounge. Tambarare Camp brings a distinctive brand of casual sophistication to the Ol Pejeta plateau. Set in the Maasai Mara in the heart of Kenya's big game country, Olonana Lodge offers a contemporary take on the classic safari experience. Renovated in 2018, this luxury safari lodge’s 14 pavilions blur the lines of indoor and outdoor space with stone and glass finishes, each with a private veranda overlooking the Mara River. Other updates include expanded deck space and main areas. The camp dining room highlights ingredients harvested from an on-site organic garden. Meanwhile, bush breakfasts, picnics and dinners can be arranged. Other amenities include a library, pool and a small spa. As the afternoon game drive comes to an end, drive to a specially chosen vantage point for a sundowner overlooking the Mara plains. Meanwhile, optional activities include cultural visits, scenic flights and hot air balloon rides over the vast plains. The lodge also offers visits to the A&K Philanthropy-sponsored Safe Water for Schools Initiative. Olonana Lodge is a welcome option for a classic, luxury safari experience. Grizzly Tales Wilderness adventures in British Colombia by Stuart Swords Canada had long been on my list of places I dreamed of exploring, but nothing could have braced me for the jaw-dropping landscapes of British Columbia, the ridiculously nice people, and the wild thrill of spotting a grizzly bear - because who doesn’t want a bear encounter as their travel souvenir? Our hosts, Audley Travel, built us the most incredible itinerary brimming with captivating discoveries and excursions, yet still leaving room to soak in the stunning landscapes (some incredibly remote) and immerse ourselves in local culture. But first, let’s take a moment to appreciate Canada itself. This vast country, the second-largest in the world, is a patchwork of breathtaking scenery and rich history. Did you know Canada is home to over two million lakes? Those staggering figures serve as a delightful reminder that while I may be just one person, I’m surrounded by an entire country bursting with beauty to explore. The best time to visit really depends on 22 Swords Travel Magazine | Spring / Summer 2025

Looking back at my own trip it had it all - urban exploration, breathtaking wildlife encounters, and world-class luxury. From the buzz of Whistler to the stillness of Klahoose Wilderness Resort, this was a trip that balanced adventure, indulgence, and a deep connection to nature - proof that Canada does luxury on its own breathtaking terms. Tucked away in the remote Desolation Sound, Klahoose Wilderness Lodge is an Indigenousowned eco-lodge that offers a deep connection with nature. It was here that I had my bear moment. One bear, in particular, stole the show - Snorkel Bear. This guy had a unique way of fishing, diving underwater to scoop up salmon before surfacing to feast. Watching him in his element, surrounded by untouched wilderness, was truly the highlight of my trip. If you visit Whistler be sure to book a Jeep Glacier Safari. This adventure takes you up Blackcomb Mountain in a 4×4, navigating stunning alpine trails to the glacier. It was certainly one of my favourite experiences. For a truly indulgent, adrenaline moment you might also consider a helicopter tour Having enjoyed the buzz of Vancouver, I took an exhilarating 35-minute seaplane ride to laid-back Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. Pretty much as soon as we landed, we headed to the harbour, where we were whisked off to board a catamaran. Whale watching here is an experience like no other, with the chance to spot orcas, humpbacks, and grey whales in their natural habitat. Highlight moments Scan here to read Stuart’s full report
24 How to do Southeast Asia in 3 weeks Three countries. Three weeks. One epic trip. From buzzing cities to junglecovered ruins and sugar-soft beaches, this three-week journey through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand is the dream itinerary to experience Southeast Asia in one hit. Begin in northern Vietnam, where the capital is loud, lively and unapologetically full-on. Hanoi greets you with honking horns, steaming bowls of pho and bright plastic stools scattered along pavements. Take a side trip to cruise otherworldly Halong Bay, winding down days with tai chi on deck. Then after a hit of coastal calm, it's south to Hoi An, a delightful UNESCO-listed town that’s as photogenic as it is peaceful. Lanterns hang across yellow-painted buildings, tailors call out from shopfronts and you can try your hand at cooking Vietnamese dishes from scratch. Swords Travel Magazine | Spring / Summer 2025
25 Next up is Ho Chi Minh City, a sprawling metropolis with a big personality. Navigate motorbike-clogged streets and local markets with a private guide or head out to the Cu Chi Tunnels for an insight into Vietnam’s turbulent past. A short hop to Siem Reap in Cambodia brings spine-tingling moments at iconic Angkor Wat; all ancient stone and twisting Banyan roots with sunrises that stop you mid-step. And to end on a high: Thailand is the final chapter in this three-country adventure. Bangkok delivers a jolt of energy – think neon lights and cutting-edge city style. Then it’s off to Phuket’s palm-lined coastline: the wind-down you’ve more than earned. Spend your days exactly how you like: toes in the sand, book in hand, cocktail by the pool or out exploring nearby islands by boat. Southeast Asia? That’s a wrap. (till next time – you’ll be back). Asia’s rich culture, delicious food, stunning beaches, and warm people keep me coming back. On my recent trip to Thailand, I explored Phuket, Krabi, and the serene Koh Yao Noi. Over the last eight years, Swords Travel has picked up no less than 22 awards, both from industry players and consumer groups. We’re immensely proud of these accolades, which range from UK Luxury Agency of the Year and Independent Agency of the Year to Merton’s Best Small Business. Having our hard work recognised is a wonderful feeling, but yet more important to us is the positive feedback we receive from our clients themselves. So while they may not involve a glittering awards ceremony, our high levels of repeat business and customer satisfaction are our proudest achievements to date. your local, multi award-winning independent travel agent 0203 907 1100 info@swordstravel.co.uk www.swordstravel.co.uk 38a High Street, Wimbledon Village, SW19 5BY
