Hello, and welcome to our latest travel magazine where we hope to feed your wanderlust with luxury travel ideas and destinations. In this issue we celebrate the wonderful world of luxury cruising in all its variations from the high seas to shallow hulled vessels plying the world’s most picturesque rivers. Expedition cruising is a particular sector that is catching the eye of the more intrepid. Specially designed vessels from companies like Ponant and AE Expeditions are exploring ever more remote regions in the Arctic and Antarctica. In addition, these eco-focused cruise itineraries are also leading the way in the introduction of more efficient systems and cleaner propulsion to reduce pollutants into the marine environment. Of course, the most environmentally friendly way to travel on water is under sail using natural wind power. Spectacular square rig yachts like Silver Cloud and her two sister vessels offer the traditional romance of sailing, together with the luxuries and quality of accommodation associated with the larger ocean liners. We hope that you will enjoy this special ‘Cruise’ edition and that it will inspire you to take to the rivers and oceans of the world. With kind regards and ‘Bon Voyage’. The white Luxury POLAR Expedition Cruises or most of the year the ‘White Continent’ of Antarctica is too cold and inhospitable to visit, but for a few short months, at the height of the polar summer it softens its icy grip enabling a variety of expeditiongrade ships of varying luxury to make their way across the Drake Passage, leaving the southern port of Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina to explore the Antarctic Peninsula in a round trip that might also include visits to some of the remote islands of the South Atlantic like South Georgia, South Orkney and of course, The Falklands. The North-West portion of the Antarctic Peninsula is the most frequently visited by expedition cruises and is home to many of the most popular landing sites. The Gerlache Strait is renowned for the stunning scenery with the snow covered mountains, as if covered in icing sugar, with numerous glaciers tumbling down to the sea. Being the most northerly part of the whole continent, the Peninsula enjoys the mildest Antarctic conditions, with temperatures in winter averaging a balmy -20 degrees C (-4 degrees F)! In the summer, things warm up to an average of just above freezing. Large areas of this part of the peninsula are ice-free in the early season, being important breeding and feeding grounds for many iconic Antarctic species. It's here that many of the historic Antarctic expeditions began, and where early military and scientific bases were first established, some of which you will be able to visit if conditions allow. OF THE NILE ULTIMATE RIVER CRUISE EXPERIENCES ith its unparallelled cultural and archaeological heritage, Egypt has been attracting visitors for centuries and from the days of Napoleon a series of spectacular discoveries have whetted the appetite of modern visitors. Whether it’s Giza’s monumental pyramids, Luxor’s colossal Valley of the Kings, or the incomparable river Nile, this country is generous with its riches The Nile is the jugula of North Eastern Africa. From its sources in Ethiopia (White Nile) and Uganda (Blue Nile), the river flows for 6.650km through eleven countries, its main tributaries joining together at Khartoum in the Sudan. A spectacular dam project at Aswan completed in 1970 saw the creation of the vast reservoir of Lake Nasser and the ending of the annual flooding of the Nile Plain. However, it was this phenomenon that shaped the ancient Egyptian and Nubian civilisations. The silt-rich banks of the river supported all the agriculture and the river itself was the highway for commerce. Great cities and fabulous temples lined the shores whilst the encroaching desert was held at bay. Today, it is the ultimate archaeological water ride supporting flotillas of floating hotels on journeys between Cairo all the way up river to the Aswan Dam. The stretch of the Nile between the ancient city of Luxor and Aswan has a particularly high concentration of ancient sights so you will find that most river cruises tend to focus on this area, Guests generally start their adventure with a few nights in Cairo so that they can tune in to ancient Egypt with a visit to the Pyramids of Giza and the soon to be opened (Autumn 2022) Grand Egyptian Museum which will house over 50,000 antiquities including all the belongings of King Tutankhamun, all in one place for the first time in history. From Cairo an onward 1 hour flight brings you to Luxur, your embarkation point for the river cruise of a lifetime. W 17

once you have had your fill of hectic Cairo and the Great Pyramids, a short flight to Luxor (or Aswan in reverse) will usher in your Nile cruise which will vary between 3-7 days. Boats vary in size and quality, but we have featured some of the very finest following some key highlights along the Nile including Abu Simbel, which is an unforgettable extension to the very south of Egypt. Also consider spending some days relaxing on the Red Sea coast. The best time to go on a Nile cruise is between October and April. It's not too hot, which is important since you'll be hopping on and off to visit temples along the way. The heat in Aswan and Luxor can be intense, and it's not recommended that you travel during the peak summer months from June through August when average temperatures hover over the 100 F (40 C) mark, and it's even hotter when you're inside some of the tombs. highlights of the nile The sheer spectacle and incredible engineering feat that are the Pyramids of Giza have been a defining sight in Egypt through the centuries, and are the last of the ancient Wonders of the World to survive to the present day. Of the three pyramids situated on the Giza plateau on the outskirts of Cairo, the Great Pyramid at 147 metres high is the most iconic. With a lion's body and a human head, The Sphinx of Giza represents Ra-Horakhty, a form of the powerful sun god, and is the incarnation of royal power and the protector of the temple doors. The Temple of Edfu is one of the more famous landmarks in Egypt, it is a complex of courts and chambers decorated with engraved walls and statues. It has weathered the centuries incredibly well and, as the second-largest temple in Egypt, it was built to honour Horus, the falcon-headed god of war. Falcons were worshipped because they do not eat dead flesh, so they were considered noble. giza The Great Pyramids and The Sphinx temple of edfu So large it took 180 years to build CAIRO Red Sea Mediterranean Sea EGYPT Lake Nasser LUXOR Abu Simbel Edfu Hurghada Sharm el Shaykh ASWAN Alexandria Valley of the Kings Kom Ombo Denderah Abydos Giza 18

Perhaps Egypt’s best-known site after the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Valley of the Kings, which is located close to Luxor, was a burial ground for pharaohs from Egypt’s 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties. There’s plenty to see on a Valley of the Kings tour, with 63 tombs in the valley itself – the most famous is that of Tutankhamun, discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. Many of the tombs have vivid wall paintings that are wonderful to witness. The four, towering statues that dominate the entrance to Abu Simbel welcome you to one of Egypt’s most remarkable monuments. Created to project the power of ancient Egypt over Nubia and its southern neighbours, the main temple of Ramses II is lit by rays from the sun twice each year – once on Ramses birthday, and once on his coronation. There is a smaller temple of Ramses II’s queen – Nefertari – and is one of the few places in Egypt where the male and female statues are the same size. Inside, scripts written on the walls tell tales of Ramses II’s military victories and his personal life. abu simbel A show of might in the south Luxor Thebes, ancient capital of Upper Egypt Dating from 1392 BC, Luxor is a treasure trove of ancient temples, buildings, and statues all packed into what was once the ancient city of Thebes – the pharaoh’s capital at the height of their power.
