Islands of the Caribbean & Bermuda

Like a time capsule the old town of Havana offers a nostalgic snapshot of the romantic and heady atmosphere of a bygone era. But be warned, this enchanting tapestry of classic American cars and weathered Spanish mansions may soon undergo a rapid adjustment into the 21st century, having hibernated since the end of the 1950’s. There is huge potential for the Caribbean’s largest country, and it is no small wonder, for within its 44,000 square mile footprint it is a land of extraordinary diversity consisting a main landmass with both highlands and rolling hills together with rich, agricultural lowland plains. For tropical island explorers it is also girdled by a series of archipelagoes with over 1,600 islands, islets, and cays. World-class beach resorts are fast appearing and yet there are plenty of places to escape to discover the old, colonial spirit of Cuba. For sure, you will be intoxicated by the sultry Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and you will receive a warm welcome from a population that has yearned for their liberties and share a unique passion for living. Colonial Jewels Outside of Old Havana, towns with well preserved colonial hearts include Trinidad on the south coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site boasting a historic centre, cobblestone streets and a great selection of restaurants. The city of Camaguey has a complex maze of winding cobbled streets that were supposedly designed to confuse marauding pirates! In the deep south lies Santiago de Cuba, which pulses to the Caribbean’s largest carnival in the month of July. Green Spaces and Off the Beaten Track Both ends of the mainland offer stunning scenic adventures. The lush foothills of Viñales to the west Of Havana is prime Tobacco country and best explored on horseback during the dry season. Equally invigorating, though involving extensive travel is the area around Baracoa, famous for its chocolate, in the very east. Coastal Charms No trip to the Caribbean should understate the charms of the sea, and those in search of the perfect stretch of powdery, white sands will not be disappointed by Cuba’s generous shoreline. Whether it is the attraction of the ‘all-inclusive’ resorts of Veradero or the opportunity to seek out a deliciously remote haven on one of the myriad islets and cays, there are options to suit every need.
